PROPERTY TAX LEGAL RESIDENCE QUALIFICATION PROCEDURES

Conway, South Carolina– The Horry County Assessor’s Office would like to remind citizens that a 6% assessment ratio is automatically applied to all property.  If the residence will be a primary/legal residence, they may qualify for the lower 4% ratio.  A primary or legal residence is owner occupied and includes no more than five acres of contiguous land.

 

In order to qualify for the 4% ratio, property owners should download the Horry County Assessor’s application located on Horry County Government’s website at http://www.horrycounty.org/portals/0/Docs/assessor/LegalResidence.pdf.  Once the application is filled out, owners will need to provide documentation along with the application.  Documentation includes

·      South Carolina driver’s license or identification cards showing the current address for the owner(s) and spouse

·      South Carolina vehicle registration(s) showing the current address for the owner(s) and spouse

·      Most recently filed Federal and South Carolina income tax return for the owner(s) and spouse

·      South Carolina voter’s registration cards for owner(s) and spouse

·      If legally separated or divorced, court issued proof of legal separation or divorce

·      For members of the United States Military, copies of current orders and military ID

·      Other proof may be required as necessary

 

The application and supporting documents may be brought in person or mailed to the Horry County Assessor’s Office, 1301 Second Avenue, Conway, SC 29526.  Applications cannot be emailed or faxed.

Owners are encouraged to apply for the 4% legal residence assessment ratio by August 1^st to have the lower ratio reflected in the tax bills mailed in October.  The deadline is January 15^th.

 

Citizens may not receive any further notification if the application is approved.  If the application is disapproved or removed from the special assessment ratio for any reason, owners will receive an assessment notice reflecting the disapproval.

COUNTYWIDE RUN-OFF ELECTION SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 24

 

 

Conway, South Carolina – Horry County Registration and Elections would like to remind registered voters that the election date for the countywide Run-Off Election is Tuesday, June 24, 2014.

 

All absentee ballots must be turned into the Horry County Registration and Elections Office by 7 p.m. the day of the election. Absentee voters may vote in person at the Horry County Registration and Elections Office at 1515 4^th Avenue in Conway up until 5 p.m. the Monday prior to the election, which will be Monday, June 23, 2014. 

 

Voters are encouraged to review their voter registration information to confirm any changes prior to the upcoming Run-Off Election by going to www.scvotes.org under the “Voters” tab on the left.  Also, voters unsure of their voting location should contact their county voter registration office at 915-5440 or log onto the State Election Commission website at www.scvotes.org.

Gullah Geechee Signs Erected On Route 17

The  Gullah Geechee people of Horry County and members of the Horry County Government will officially welcome two historical signs erected  along Highway 17.  One is located at the SC border entering the county from NC and the other near Murrells Inlet at the border between Georgetown and Horry Counties.  “The presence of these signs today represents a lot of hard work that came before them. The work began in the early 1980s when most of it had to do with raising awareness, telling the story and educating the people,” claims Veronica D. Gerald English professor at Coastal Carolina University and Vice Chairman of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Commission. These signs will tell drivers that they are travelling along the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and  they  recognize the Gullah Geechee people, their heritage and contributions.

This corridor is comprised of  the coastal regions (and thirty miles inland) beginning around Pender County, NC and continuing along Highway 17 to St. Augustine, FL, thus making Horry county a part of a  nationally recognized Heritage Area. 

The signs placed in Horry County are two of nearly 100 signs placed along the corridor in NC, FL, GA, and SC.
